Tell the Town of Clarkstown: NO GOOSE KILLING! 3/23/97 Last summer Clarkstown officials paid a private contractor to round up 251 Canada geese (including life-long mated pairs, their families and 5 goslings) from three town parks to be brutally slaughtered. Despite the fact that this plan failed in many ways, town supervisor Charles Holbrook refuses to listen to reason and has announced plans to repeat the blood bath again this year. Here is the complete story. On behalf of the geese that may become victims this year and goose complainants who want help, we ask for your participation in an important letter writing campaign. You may wish to include some of the following points in your letter: 1. The award-winning report from the "Rockland County Canada Geese Citizens Advisory Committee" recommended that complaints about geese be addressed using proven, effective non-lethal methods of control. Demand that Clarkstown comply with the findings of this report. 2. As we predicted, the removal and killing of geese was a failure . Within a week or two other geese moved in to replace those that had been removed (about 100 were counted in Kings Park). The fact that another round up is planned this year proves that killing is ineffective. 3. Despite claims to the contrary, the population of geese in the County has remained essentially constant since 1993 (approximately 3,000 geese). 4. Note that over $10,000 of taxpayer money was wasted on a "solution" that lasted for less than two weeks. Unlike killing, non-lethal methods are effective, humane and cost- effective. 5. The alleged "health threat" of geese in parks has been shown to be false by infectious disease experts. 6. Using the needy to dispose of the geese is merely a ploy to win support for an unpopular and irrational plan. Since it was anticipated that the geese would be unfit for human consumption, the plan was also a violation of human rights. (It is only because the Coalition threatened legal action that the town had the dead geese tested for toxicity -- we were right -- they were contaminated.) In desperation, Holbrook tried to give the lead-laden flesh to the zoo; they said, no thanks! 7. The claim that appropriate non-lethal methods were tried in Clarkstown is false. The record shows that only two things were tried: a feeding ban and the relocation of geese to the town dump 2 miles away. Experts in non-lethal wildlife control have stated that these efforts are not the work of someone serious about getting results. Please write to:
Charles Holbrook
........and town board members: Send copies to:
Scott Vanderhoef, County Executive
