Action Alert
Canada Geese Need Your Help!

US Fish and Wildlife Service Publishes Draft Environmental Impact Statement Proposes massive goose killing plan. Ignores public opposition.

Canada geese are facing a life or death situation. Without your help, massive killings will become a reality.

Over the past few years, STATE WILDLIFE AGENCIES, the USDA's WILDLIFE SERVICES, and COMMERCIAL WILDLIFE KILLERS have been escalating their propaganda war against Canada geese to justify the need for a change to federal migratory bird regulations that would make it easier to kill geese without legitimate justification and without federal oversight.

While the Coalition recognizes the need to control geese under certain circumstances, the assertion that their proposed regulation will "help solve goose problems," is pure propaganda designed to justify a massive government cash grab. Those pushing hardest for the regulation change are those who would reap significant financial gains:

Proponent

Economic Incentive

State Wildlife Agencies

Increased revenues from hunting and other direct lethal actions.

Wildlife Services (USDA)

More money for this federal extermination business.

Commercial Wildlife Killers

More money for private extermination businesses.

These special interests have used every means at their disposal to slander geese using exaggerations and misinformation about population growth, property damage, and public health and safety. The US Fish and Wildlife Service has been indifferent to this blatant conflict of interest and has made no attempt to validate the legitimacy of the claims made by these special interest groups.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the agency responsible for making policy regarding migratory birds such as Canada geese. Rather than creating policy that would help communities or individuals resolve conflicts with geese using effective humane, non-lethal control methods - what the public prefers - the Service continues to cater to those who profit from the killing of wildlife, including geese.

Victim

Impact

The Public

Hunting in parks and neighborhoods in the summer when people are hiking, picnicking, camping, etc.

Canada Geese

Adult geese and goslings killed on large scale.

People with Goose Problems

More geese forced into areas where they are unwanted (private property, etc.). False hope that killing will resolve goose conflicts.

International Treaty

The Migratory Bird Treaty would be violated. Many of the geese killed cross international boundries.

Before the Service proceeds, it is obligated to accept input from the public. Here is where your help is critical.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is currently in the process of accepting public comment on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement in which they propose turning over the fate of Canada geese to state wildlife agencies. This proposed regulation is known as the "State Empowerment Alternative" (also known as Alternative F). Under this regulation, State wildlife agencies would be able to kill geese for profit directly and/or pass this authority on to others, such as Wildlife Services and commercial wildlife killers.
