In areas where geese may considered a problem, the primary attraction is turf grass. Since geese are grazers, lawn areas are an inviting source of food for them. ReJex-iT (and other similar products that go by different trade names) is a non-toxic matieral that when applied to turf grass makes it inedible and repulsive to geese. The active ingredient is the same compound that gives concord grapes their characteristic flavor.

ReJex-iT is generally used to keep geese out of relatively small areas (backyards, around walkways at corporate parks, etc.). Methods have been developed to do larger areas with less material (i.e., checkerboard application patterns to give geese the impression that the whole area is treated). Indeed, strategic application is always more material-efficient. For example, if geese come out of the water to feed on grass at a particular site, it may only be necesary to treat the zone that the geese first encounter, not the entire area.

Results are observed as soon as geese attempt to feed on the treated area.

Application should be most intensive in the early spring or when geese are determining their feeding patterns for the season. This will help establish a pattern of behavior in which the geese will avoid the area where they previously had a bad experience.

There are a number of brand names associated with this type of goose deterrent product (e.g., Turfshield, GooseChase, etc.) These products may have different formulations and concentrations of active ingredient (methyl anthranilate, grape flavor). The formulation will determine how well the material will last on grass (resistance to rain, etc.) and the concentration will determine its effectiveness.
